After Daniel prevents a girl's suicide, he discovers a "hidden" Jewish community of individuals whose convictions permeate their daily lives; this in stark contrast to the English aristocrats of the novel whose morals lack conviction. The novel has been criticized for lacking balance, but is also recognized as Eliot's most ambitious work. First published in 1876.
